Non-Surgical Periodontal Treatment

Non-Surgical Treatment for Periodontal Disease

When periodontal disease is detected early, conservative or non-surgical methods of care, combined with improved oral hygiene, can restore periodontal health. For patients without gum disease, periodic professional cleanings are sufficient to maintain oral health. However, deeper cleanings and other non-surgical treatments are recommended when gingivitis or more advanced gum disease is present.

The American Academy of Periodontology advocates for achieving periodontal health using the least invasive and cost-effective treatment approaches. Non-surgical procedures like scaling and root planing are the first line of defense against the progression of periodontal disease.

What is Scaling and Root Planing?

Since periodontal disease is an inflammatory response to plaque, tartar, and bacterial toxins, scaling and root planing help halt its progression by mechanically eliminating these irritants. In some cases, antimicrobial medication placed under the gumline or systemic medications may be used alongside these procedures to further reduce bacterial populations and promote healing.

If non-surgical treatments do not achieve the desired outcomes, surgical options may be recommended to halt the progression of periodontal disease and repair damage where possible.
